Geological and geotechnical surveys for the Mediterranean high speed railway corridor. Section: Pulpi - Vera

Design of 26 km of Spanish high speed railway line, with an operating speed of 350 km/h and standard gauge. The alignment parameters are: minimum curve radius of 5,000 m and 15mm/m of normal maximum gradient. It is a double-track line, with a minimum platform width of 14 m on the superior ballast base, and a minimum width of 12 m in viaducts and underpasses. The layout runs over hilly orography, with cuttings and embankments up to 40 m high. The main difficulties of the project were: the crossing of several watercourses with large viaducts; study of a series of artificial tunnels; landslides; presence of alluvial soil with low carrying capacity; study of the possible collapsibility of surface deposits; existence of expansive soils and a specific study on the reuse of materials from the excavation of the alignment.
