Control and supervision of the construction works for the new railway access to the North-Northwest of Spain. Section: Soto del Real – Segovia. Track and infrastructure. Lot 3. Section length: 28.4 km
Construction of two twin-tunnels: 28.4 km long, with an 8.50-m I.D., a 9.45-m excavation diameter and a distance between track center lines of 30 m, under Guadarrama mountain range. They are meant for the High Speed Rail, for a design speed of 350 km/h. It is the EU’s biggest civil engineering project and, upon the construction of the tunnels, they will be the fifth longest tunnels in the world. The construction budget was 1,228 million euro. Four innovative tunnel boring machines (TBM) were used for the excavation, with the capacity to excavate 18 m/day. Simultaneously, the TBM placed the precast concrete segments (32 cm) for the inside coating. These segments were built in plants located at the tunnel portals. Concrete was obtained from aggregates from the excavation. Tunnels are connected with cross-passages every 250 m, to ensure passengers’ safety.
